In Florence and Bologna, I took some time to visit anatomical wax collections.

Totally gross and certainly NSFW but of a great scientific interest... )

Hello, Livejournal, how long has it been since I haven't posted here ? 8 months ?

That's a long interruption, even for me. I guess I should blame Twitter ? Everybody does, anyway.

So what has been going on in my life recently ?

Last month, I went for a vacation in Italy : I visited Florence, Bologna (shortly), Rome and Naples. It was pretty great and I took lots of pictures which you can see on my flickr.

But since there is a lot of them, here's a short selection :
cut for picture-heaviness... )

All right, that's all for this post. Coming next : wax guts and 70's horror-porn.

(sans titre)

Esther has posted a new comic over at La Lanterne Brisée, and it is totally fabulous. Also there's almost no text, so you don't even need to understand French. I assume it was meant to be posted last week for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transhobia, but it was worth the wait.

I've really been enjoying her comics since the relaunch of her blog. It's worth checking out the archives to see how her style is evolving.

For a pair of fine carrots, part 2

Episode 19 of Platinum Grit is live, at last !

Go read it here.

It's really excellent. Totally worth the wait.

Aristophanes would be proud

Someone has been reading the classics : Kenyan women are trying to pressure politicians into finding an end to the current political crisis, by re-enacting Lysistrata's story. That is, by withholding sex for a week.

Here is the story

"We are asking even sex workers to join the cause, even if we have to pay them ourselves," said Patricia Nyaundi, executive director of the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya.

"We cannot allow our leaders to argue over non-issues while relegating the issues that affect this country to the back burner. When this happens, women suffer the most," said Ann Njogu, director of Centers for Rights Education and Awareness, which describes itself as a non-partisan organization that "seeks to empower the society on women's human rights."

I can't go to jail, I'm a princess and it's my birthday

[livejournal.com profile] harveyjames  is a comic genius, and most probably an evil genius.

I just read this comic he made for Vice Magazine, and it felt like being punched in the gut. Repeatedly. And I mean that as a compliment. I wish I could explain, but I was never a good critic, just trust me on this one, Okay ? Read it. It's genius. No really, read it. You'll thank me later, or maybe hate me, but it's worth it.

WARNING : as you could expect from a comic published at "Vice Magazine", it's not exactly SFW.

Winter is coming...

If, like me, you're a fan of G.R.R.Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" (A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, a Storm of Swords, a Feast for Crows...), you'll want to have a look at Algesiras' brand new fanart gallery site : Highgarden. (Algesiras' main blog is here, her comics are here (story and art), here (story adaptation) and soon here (story))

Also, I hear HBO is making a tv adaptation ? Well if somebody has the possibility to render it properly on tv, I guess it's them, but I'm still a little doubtful about it. They have an official blog, appropriately named "Winter is coming", where you can see the cast, and even a summary of the pilot's script, I'm told (go back to december's post).

Today's good webcomic news is that Ursula Vernon's webcomic "Digger" is now completely free. You can read it all without needing to purchase a subscription.

So really you have no excuse. Digger is one of the best webcomics ever, it has a wombat, a dead god, an oracular slug, among other thing, and... well I really suck at describing things I like, so let's leave it at IT BE GOOD COMIC.

Just trust me on this one, you won't lose your time.

Or maybe you will, but it'll be fun.

Also, you can check out Miss Vernon's other works at her website. Among other things, she's the creator of the Biting Pear of Salamanca, also known as the LOL WUT pear.

Home at last

So my vacation is finally over. I arrived in France today, and am currently unpacking my things.

While I was at it, I took a picture of all the comics I'd bought during my trip. I gues somebody is a big nerd. (click on the picture to see the notes on this photo, if there are comics you don't recognize).

So I'm in Portland now. No picture, because it's raining like hell, but I've had a great time so far, mostly thanks to [livejournal.com profile] erikamoen and [livejournal.com profile] reallife2010 (and Sushi).

So, San Francisco was a blast. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] solmaru and [livejournal.com profile] khyungbird for keeping me company, taking me to gay bars, feeding me, getting me drunk, introducing me to awesome people. Thanks to Pancha for hosting a movie night about vagina dentata and real dolls, and for the excellent cupcakes and chocolate truffles. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shaenon for putting up with my embarrassed fanboy attitude. Thanks to you too, Karen, you know why.

Once again, if you're in Portland too and want to hang out, leave me a word, I'm here until saturday morning, and then it's back to France, home, and work.

Well, look what a cool layout Algesiras has put on her blog ! (it's worth looking at even if you can't read french). If you can guess at first sight what the illustration refers to, you are, like me, a big nerd.

(Algesiras is the author of the comic Candelabres, which I highly recommend)

Sambazka

OK, this is adorable : Sambazka - There she is. The best animated series in Flash I've seen in a while.

Don't watch just the first episode. It gets better, then it gets a little sad, then it gets really dark, then...

If it doesn't make you cry a little, you have no heart.

SPQR Blues en Français

Oh, I guess I should mention my latest webcomic translation project. It's only relevant for you if you're french-speaking and can't read english, in which case I doubt you're reading this journal, but still...

It's temporarily at http://spqrblues-fr.blogspot.com/ , updating very irregularly when I find the times (usually at least once week, by chunks of 3 to 5 strips). There might be a "real" site in the future...

I'm not really satisfied with the font I'm using, but it's the better I could find (and my handwriting sucks) that included the French letters (such as é, è, à, ç etc.). I'm open to suggestions, though.

To be fair, we had to chose between two morons.

I was going to make a post asking my american LJ friends to try not to elect a moron this time, and then... I remembered who we elected in France and thought I'd better shut up.

But, you know, if I could, I would totally vote for Kerry Edwards.

I come in peace

Yesterday I bought my plane tickets for my trip to the USA in February. I will arrive in New York the 1st and leave from Portland the 28th

I also had to fill the online application for the Department of Homeland Security.

Among other question, there was this :

"Have you ever been arrested or convicted for an offense or crime involving moral turpitude (...)"

"Moral turpitude", now that's a an imagination-triggering phrase if I ever saw one. I wonder what the person who wrote this had in mind... How, exactly do you do, do you commit moral turpitude ? How many people does it take to have a morale turpitude ? Do they have to be of different gender ? Can you keep your clothes on, when you make a moral turpitude ? If I perform a google image search for "moral turpitude", should I keep the safe filter on ?

EDIT : It goes better ! Wikipedia has an entry about moral turpitude, including a list of crimes involving, or not involving, moral turpitude : We learn that joy riding does not involve M.T. on the condition that you return the car when you're done, that counterfeiting, mail fraud and willfull tax evasion are definitely M.T., while desertion from the armed forces, Escape from prison, loan sharking, drunkenness, gambling and firearm violation aren't.
